Every year on April 25, the country pauses to honour the soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who served and sacrificed in times of war.
During this time, communities gather to commemorate those who have served, fallen, and are still sacrificing for the sake of peace and safety through moving services, parades, and community events. Veterans are given space to reflect and hold space.
The red or Flanders poppy was one of the first flowers to grow in the mud and soil of the First World War battlefields in Flanders. This was famously observed by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in his poem 'In Flanders fields' ('In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses row on row...'). After his death in 1918, the poppy became a symbol of regeneration and growth in a landscape of blood and destruction.
The purple poppy symolises all animals that have served and/or died during conflict. It is estimated that more than eight million animals sacrificed their lives in World War I alone.
Both our poppies are a symbol of both Remembrance and Hope for a peaceful future.
With each sale, $3.00 will be donated to the RSA poppy appeal in NZ.
